Life Is Snot On An Olive In My Martini

for Alan Catlin
when you own something
you aren't free,
you are owned

you get to worrying,
wondering if it will
break or wear out
or get stolen or hit
by a cement truck

or struck by lightning
or other acts of god
(does god act?)

to protect what owns you
you gotta work
to own more & more
to be owned by more

in the end
you end up
slobbering & shitting on yourself
in a waiting to die home
& your family is saying

how they hope you'll
get better & silently
praying for the worms
to be gobbling your carcass

so they can own
what owned you
& what will own them
